Ingredients:
Notes:
To make the sugary coating, you need 2 parts sugar to 1 part water if you are making a larger batch.
Using a shallow pan will make it easier to coat the fruit compared to using a pot.
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Fruits
In a medium-sized pan, add the sugar and water. Heat over medium heat until the mixture reaches around 135-165°C (275-329°F). Do not stir the mixture as it may cause the syrup to crystalise making it hard to work with.
If you don’t have a thermometer, you can check if the mixture is ready by dipping a spoon or wooden skewer into the syrup and immediately dipping it into your ice water bath. If it hardens, it’s ready! Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t turn into caramel.
Step 3: Dip the Fruit
Once the syrup reaches the correct temperature, remove it from the heat immediately.
Step 5: Dunk it!
Quickly dip each fruit skewer into the syrup, ensuring the fruit is evenly coated.
Immediately dip your coated fruit into the ice water bath to instantly cool and harden (2-5 seconds).
Step 4: Eat!
Once hardened, your sweet treat is ready to be enjoyed. The fruit should have a hard, shiny coating.
Tanghulu is a fun and delicious treat that's sure to impress both kids and adults alike. Perfect for parties, picnics, or just as a special treat, these candied fruits bring a taste of Chinese street food to your home. Enjoy!
